Sales Rep Updates CRM Without Being Asked; Management Launches Investigation

Management at a fictional commercial roofing company opened an internal investigation Tuesday after a sales representative updated the CRM without an email, a team meeting or someone standing directly behind him.

The update included a next step and an actual date. Executives initially suspected a software demonstration had accidentally become real. IT checked the activity log, then checked whether the activity log was feeling all right.

‘He just finished the call and typed what happened,’ said a visibly shaken manager. ‘We train people for this. We never expect to see it in the wild.’ The employee was asked to reconstruct his movements between hanging up and pressing Save.

By afternoon, a committee had been formed to explain the breakthrough. It requested three meetings, a spreadsheet and a follow-up email. The rep entered those in the CRM too. Investigators are calling it a pattern.
